Randy Miller is the composer of "Amargosa." Born in Ellenville, New York,
Miller received a degree in composition from Boston's Berklee College of Music
where he studied piano with Madame Chaloff. During that time, Miller
orchestrated and conducted music for several theater companies. His desire to
compose music for film led Miller to Florida where he was offered local film and
television work. Shortly thereafter, Graduate studies led Miller to the
University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
The Hollywood Reporter singled out Miller for his "rousing, pulse-quickening
score" for WITHOUT LIMITS, the critically praised Cruise-Wagner production about
runner Steve Prefontaine. Stone's HEAVEN & EARTH won a Golden Globe
nomination for Best Score; Miller orchestrated, arranged and conducted
world-music artist Kitaro's themes as well as providing additional music for the
powerful Vietnam war drama.
He recently won Best Film Score honors at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his work
on THE SOONG SISTERS (co-written with Kitaro), which combined authentic Chinese
folk instruments with a sweeping orchestral score. His music adorns two films
scheduled for release early this year: FAMILY TREE, a tender family drama from
Warner Bros., and AMARGOSA, a documentary feature from award-winning filmmaker
Todd Robinson.
Miller is equally proud of his jazz score for the as-yet-unreleased
Norman Mailer tale THE TIME OF HER TIME, his Hitchcock-style suspense music for
the Rob Lowe psychological thriller LIVING IN PERIL, and his broadly Americana
score as showcased in DREAMRIDER starring James Earl Jones.
Among his other recent credits are synth/electronic scores for the Showtime
series THE OUTER LIMITS (created in his state-of-the-art studio in Topanga), his
contemporary "unplugged" music for the teen-suicide drama PICTURE OF PRIORITY
and a swashbuckling orchestral score for the Tim Curry action-fantasy PIRATES OF
THE PLAINS. In all, he has written music for nearly 30 films and several
television series.
Miller had the distinction of becoming the first American composer to record a
movie score in Russia. His music for HELLRAISER III: HELL ON EARTH was
performed by the 82 players and 30 voices of the Mosfilm State Symphony
Orchestra and Choir in Moscow. In fact, Miller's conducting and composing
assignments have led him to work with diverse orchestras in many cities around
the world, including London, Munich, Prague, Dublin, Miami, Seattle and Los
Angeles.
Shifting effortlessly from film to television
to record projects, Miller has written arrangements for
country stars Trisha Yearwood and Vince Gill, hip-hop
performer Michael Franti and dance-electronica artist
BT. He has also conducted a series of film-music albums
for the Varese Sarabande label. Miller, who is married
and the father of two, is currently working on a CD of
authentic acoustic world music.
