"Amargosa"
By Heather Moylan

Currently making a tour of U.S. film festivals , this documentary is a beautiful invitation into the life of Marta Becket, a 74-year-old artist/ ballerina/ painter/ singer who lives in her own creative utopia: The Amargosa Opera House. When stranded in Death Valley Junction, Calif. (pop. 10), decades ago, Becket discovered the building and spent years restoring it with paints and patience. Then, she danced. Her audience? Just the figures she'd painted on the walls. Ultimately, real-life spectators came in droves (including the documentary crew that produced this gem). Blended into the film's narrative is an animal-rights plot to rival "Bambi," a haunted-house yarn to humble "The Blair Witch Project" and a romance more moving than "The English Patient". Bottom line: Deserves a standing ovation.
